Kenny Perry Leads Titleist to Five-Win Week with Victory at The Memorial
June 2, 2008
Titleist sets the standard for winning performance, and the unmatched success by players trusting the Pro V1 and Pro V1x across the globe continued with five more victories this weekend. Kenny Perry commanded the world stage, becoming the second three-time winner of the prestigious Memorial Tournament. In addition, rookie Scott Strange captured his first PGA European Tour title, Seon Hwa Lee rallied from nine shots back to win on the LPGA Tour, and Jay Haas trusted Titleist from tee-to-green for his second consecutive crown on the Champions Tour. Another win in South Africa increases Titleist's 2008 golf ball victory count to 71, more than all other golf balls combined.
TITLEIST HIGHLIGHTS FOR WEEK ENDING JUNE 1, 2008
PGA TOUR: Kenny Perry relied upon the Pro V1x golf ball to close with a 3-under 69 and win the Memorial. He finished with an 8-under 280 total and a two-shot margin of victory over four players, including overnight leader Mathew Goggin (Pro V1x), who secured the top finish of his career, as well as Jerry Kelly (Pro V1) and Mike Weir (Pro V1). In fact, Perry topped a leaderboard that included seven Titleist golf ball players among the top nine finishers.
- Titleist was the most played golf ball at the limited-field Memorial Tournament with 73 players, compared to 17 for the nearest competitor. Titleist was also the top choice in the iron (29), wedge (111) and putter (50) categories.
- The win was the 13th by a Titleist golf ball player on the 2008 PGA Tour, more than twice the nearest competitor with 6.
PGA EUROPEAN: Rookie Scott Strange trusted the Pro V1 golf ball to earn his first career PGA European Tour victory in wire-to-wire fashion at The Celtic Manor Wales Open. Strange opened with a course record 8-under 63 on Thursday and closed with a 7-under 64 on Sunday to finish at 22-under 262, four shots clear of runner-up and Titleist ambassador Robert Karlsson. In addition to the Pro V1x golf ball, Karlsson relies on a full bag of Titleist equipment, including a 905R driver, 906F2 fairway metals, ZM Forged irons, Vokey Design gap wedge, Spin Milled sand and lob wedges and a Scotty Cameron putter. Karlsson also fired a final round 64 to post four consecutive rounds in the 60's.
Titleist was the most played golf ball at the event with 106 players, more than five times the nearest competitor with 21. The win was the 11th by a Titleist golf ball player on the 2008 European Tour, more than twice the nearest competitor with 5.
In addition to playing the Pro V1 golf ball, the champion also relied upon the new Titleist AP2 irons, and Vokey Design Spin Milled sand and lob wedges for his success.
LPGA: Pro V1 loyalist Seon Hwa Lee fired a final round 5-under 67 to rally from nine shots back and advance to a playoff. Lee won with a par on the first extra hole to capture the Ginn Tribute after both players finished regulation at 14-under 274. Song-Hee Kim (Pro V1) missed the playoff by one shot following a final round 3-under 69. The win was the third of Lee's career.
Titleist was the most played golf ball at the event with 105 players, compared to 29 for the nearest competitor. The champion also relied upon a Scotty Cameron Circa 62 putter for her success on the greens.
CHAMPIONS: Titleist ambassador Jay Haas fired a final round 6-under 65 to defend his Principal Charity Classic championship and win for the second consecutive week. The win moved him into first place on the Champions Tour money list. Haas, who captured the Senior PGA Championship last week, went 4-under over the back nine to finish at 10-under 203, one shot clear of fellow Pro V1 player Andy Bean. Haas is the first player in the eight-year history of the event to win it two straight years.
Titleist was the most played golf ball at the Principal Charity Classic with 47 players, compared to 14 for the nearest competitor. Titleist was also the top choice in wedges (38). The win marked the 13th straight for Titleist golf ball players on the 2008 Champions Tour.
What's in Jay Haas' Bag?: Pro V1 golf ball , 905R driver (9.5), 904F 3 and 5 metals (15, 19), 585.H utility metal (21), AP2 irons (4-P), Vokey Design sand wedge (54), Spin Milled lob wedge (60), Scotty Cameron Studio Design putter.
NATIONWIDE: Pro V1x player Bob May made a final round charge by firing an 8-under 64, the low round of the day, to post a runner-up finish at the Bank of America Open. Titleist ambassador Brendon de Jonge (Pro V1x, 905R driver, 906F4 fairway metal, Z Muscle and Z Blend irons, Vokey Design pitching and sand wedge, Vokey TVD lob wedge) tied for third three shots back. Spencer Levin (Pro V1), Kyle Reifers (Pro V1x), David Mckenzie (Pro V1x) and Tommy Tolles (Pro V1x) tied for fifth at 12-under.
Titleist was the most played golf ball at the event with 111 players, more than six times the nearest competitor with 18. Titleist was also the top choice in the iron (52), wedge (146) and putter (68) categories.
SOUTH AFRICA: The Sunshine Tour completed its third Vodacom Origins of Golf Tournament with Titleist full-line staff player Jean Hugo (Pro V1x) firing a 13-under 203 for a two-shot victory over Bradford Vaughan (Pro V1x). It marks the second win in three starts for Hugo and the seventh of his career. Titleist was the most played golf ball at the KwaZulu Natal event with 52 players (72%), more than three times the nearest competitor with 17.
