Callaway Golf Staff Professionals Phil Mickelson and Leta Lindley had their best when it mattered most on Sunday, as both used a full bag of Callaway Golf equipment to earn victories on the PGA and LPGA Tours, respectively. Mickelson pulled off a miraculous wedge shot to set up the winning birdie putt on the final hole, while Lindley made a six-foot putt on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff to win for the first time in her career. Lindley’s victory made it 10 wins in 13 LPGA tournaments this year for Tour i Series Golf Balls.
For Mickelson, it was his second win of the 2008 season and his second career victory at the Crown Plaza Invitational at Colonial in Fort Worth, Texas. Tied atop the leaderboard with two other players on the final hole, Mickelson’s wedge game once again stole the show. He used his 52° X-Forged Wedge to hit his approach shot from a side hill lie, carrying several trees and a greenside bunker. His Tour ix Golf Ball came to rest within 10 feet of the pin and he drained the ensuing birdie putt to earn a one-shot victory.
It was the fourth time in four days that Mickelson birdied the 18th hole at Colonial Country Club. He finished the tournament 14-under-par by shooting 65-68-65-68. He used the FT-5 Driver with I-MIX Technology, the FT Tour 13° Fairway Wood, a mixed set of X-Forged and X-Prototype Irons, the Tour ix Golf Ball and a White Hot XG #9 Putter. He also wore Tour Authentic Footwear from Callaway Golf.
For Lindley, a 14-year LPGA Tour veteran and longtime Callaway Golf Staff Pro, the drama took some extra effort after she fired a final-round 67 to force a playoff, then won the Corning Classic on that first extra hole. Her maiden victory came in her 295th career start. She had trailed by four shots through eight holes in Corning, New York. She finished the tournament 11-under-par after shooting 73-67-70-67.
“I am thrilled. I dreamed about this day for over 13 years. And, gosh, for a while you kind of wonder if it's ever going to come,” Lindley said. “When it comes down to it, am I going to be good enough to make those clutch putts coming down the stretch or to win on 18? And I was in another playoff way back when. It was so long ago I don't even know the year (1997).”
Lindley, whose husband Matt Plagmann caddies for her, is the mother of a 4-year-old son and 22-month-old daughter. The entire family travels together on the LPGA Tour.
She used the FT-5 Driver, Big Bertha Strong 3 and 5 woods, as well as Big Bertha 7-, 9- and 11-woods, X-20 Irons, the Tour i Golf Ball and the Odyssey TriForce 1 Putter. She also wore Tour Authentic Footwear from Callaway Golf. With her victory she jumped from 45th place to ninth on the ADT points list.
“Each year I would tee it up wondering, I wonder how things are going to go this year,” Lindley added. “I know I'm working hard, but I do have two children so it's little more challenging for me. But there's new talent coming out each year, and it just gets tougher and tougher. So to win this year, my 14th season on tour, with the talent as great as it is really makes it so special.”
On the PGA European Tour, Callaway Golf Staff Pro Oliver Wilson narrowly missed out on a third Callaway Golf victory, losing on the second hole of a playoff at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club in Surrey, England. The 27-year-old now has four runner-up finishes on the season.
“You know, that hurts a little,” Wilson admitted. “I had not been in a play-off for a while. It's better than not being in one at all I suppose. But it's great to be here in this tournament. It's the biggest tournament apart from the Majors that we play in. I think things might change a little bit now, but to compete in this tournament, which is a fantastic tournament, that's what I wanted to do and that's sort of the next progression.”
