Moving day might have come a day early at the 2008 Masters Tournament as several players, including Callaway Golf Staff Professional Phil Mickelson, distanced themselves from the pack on Friday. Using the new I-MIX Technology in his FT-5 Driver, Mickelson fired a bogey-free, 4-under-par 68 to climb into a tie for third place at 5-under for the tournament. He was just three shots off the lead.

“Well at least I'm working in the right direction, but I got a long ways to go and there's a few players ahead of me and there's a bunch of strong players right behind me,” Mickelson said. “I think it's going to be an exciting weekend.”

Lefty is using the FT-5 Driver with new I-MIX Technology, the FT Tour 13° Fairway Wood, X-Prototype Irons, the Tour ix Golf Ball and the Odyssey Black Series i #9 Putter.

I-MIX Technology in the FT-5 Driver allows Mickelson to interchange shafts and clubheads from day to day depending on the course conditions at Augusta National. (Learn more about I-MIX Technology here.) This personalization technology is also available in the FT-i Driver and takes advantage of recent rules changes on adjustability.

“I feel pretty good. I would rather be leading,” Mickelson added. “I would like to have some shots in hand. But I've hit the ball well and I've been playing well, and I'm only a couple shots off the lead and I'll be able to play late in the afternoon on Saturday and hopefully on Sunday, as well.”

Fellow Callaway Golf Staff Professional Nick Dougherty got himself to 1-under-par for the tournament with a 3-under-par 69 on Friday. Dougherty opened with a 74 on Thursday.

Callaway Golf Staff Professional Niclas Fasth also enjoyed a strong second round, carding a 2-under-par 70 that got him to 1-over-par for the tournament. Fasth is using an entire "square" set-up in his bag. He's playing the square-shaped FT-i Driver and FT-i Squareway 3- and 5-woods, as well as X-Prototype Irons, the Tour ix Golf Ball and the Odyssey White Hot Tour 2 Putter.

Playing in his record-breaking 51st Masters, Callaway Golf Staff Professional Gary Player carded an impressive 78 on Friday. The 72-year-old used a full bag of Callaway Golf equipment to grind his way around an Augusta National course that is far longer and more difficult than the version he first played as a 21-year-old in 1957.

“Man, that's a tough golf course,” Player said after his first round. “No question, the toughest golf course that I've ever played, not even a doubt.”

The 72nd Masters Tournament began with Callaway Golf Staff Professional Arnold Palmer hitting the ceremonial first tee shot early Thursday morning. Using the FT-i Driver, also with the new I-MIX Technology from Callaway Golf, Palmer hit his Callaway Golf ball into a dense fog. “I hit it out of sight,” he joked. For the record, the ball landed in the middle of the fairway.

On the LPGA Tour, Callaway Golf Ball Staff Professional Lorena Ochoa continues to own the top spot on LPGA leaderboards—no matter what country she's in. Using the Tour i Golf Ball and playing in her home country of Mexico at the Corona Morelia Championship, Ochoa was at 14-under-par through two rounds, holding a one shot lead. Last weekend she used the Tour i Golf Ball to win the season’s first major, the Kraft Nabisco Championship, by five strokes.
